SCI Laos in 8th ASEAN Children’s Forum

Monday 7 October 2024

Honored to be part of the first day of the 8th ASEAN Children’s Forum, where Save the Children International in Laos showcased how the Photovoice method empowers Lao children from the 'Safe Back to School' initiative to voice their concerns on climate change affects their schooling experiences and recommendations to approximately 35 children from across ASEAN. Joining 11 ASEAN countries under the theme 'Children-led Climate Change Action Toward a Resilient ASEAN Community,' these young advocates are making their voices heard for a brighter future, and we hope that the climate actions happening in Laos can inspire them.

Save the Children was invited to be one of speakers to share the topic of education as a response to climate change. A child-centred approach like the photovoice research activities was shared by Souksangna Phengdy, Education Programme Manager, who led the innovative interventions in the field on children’s participation, climate change and education. After the input from speakers, the children will have workshops and preparations for the presentation of their recommendations to the Senior Officials Meeting on Social Welfare and Development (SOMSWD) and representatives from ACWC and other sectoral bodies.

The 8th ASEAN Children’s Forum (ACF) has been held from August 19 to 21, 2024, in Vientiane Capital, Laos, hosted by the National Commission for the Advancement of Women, Mother-Child (NCAWMC). This forum serves as a vital platform for children from ASEAN Member States to engage in ASEAN processes, share their views and aspirations on issues affecting their lives, and address other regional concerns. It promotes mutual respect for diverse cultures, fosters greater awareness of ASEAN, and advocates for children's rights throughout the region.

To underscore the importance of the forum, H.E. Aly Vongnorbountham, President of the Lao Women's Union and Vice President of NCAWMC, emphasized ACF’s role in giving ASEAN children a platform to voice their concerns about climate change and advocate for necessary changes. Additionally, H.E. Padeumphone Sonthany, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, highlighted the importance of integrating the Child Protection (CP) agenda into national policies, decrees, and investment plans, with a focus on increasing investment.

This event offers Save the Children a valuable opportunity to strengthen partnerships with relevant government partners to ensure that children’s calls for change are heard both nationally and internationally.
