Save the Children International in Laos Celebrates International Children's Day and Launches New Climate Campaign

Wednesday 5 June 2024

On May 31st, Save the Children International in Laos celebrated International Children's Day with nearly 250 students from Xon Pao School. The event also marked the launch of "Children Changing Our Climate Future," Save the Children's new climate campaign in Laos. The event was further enriched by the attendance of representatives from the Institute of National Researching Science and Education, the Ministry of Education and Sports, and the Lao Youth Union.

The one-day event, themed "Empowering Young Climate Heroes," aimed to educate students and participants about children's rights affected by the climate crisis through creative activities. These activities included a panel discussion on child rights impacted by the climate crisis, climate talks from youths, and booth exhibitions from Save the Children, where students learned about our climate-resilient health, education, and child protection initiatives.

Save the Children used this opportunity to introduce the "Children Changing Our Climate Future" campaign to the young participants. The campaign aims to raise awareness among children about the impact of climate change on child rights and encourage active participation in various climate campaign activities. This campaign will be providing opportunities for young Lao to share their experiences of climate change at national, regional and global level and demand action.

Luke Ebbs, Country Director of Save the Children International in Laos, proudly stated, “To all the young climate heroes here today, your voices and actions matter. You can inspire change and lead by example. I encourage you to participate actively in the activities planned for today and speak up to be one of our climate champions.”

A highlight of the event was the climate talks from young campaigners. Listening to children and young people share their insights on climate change was eye-opening. Their stories highlighted the significant challenges they are facing now and in the future. Despite feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of these challenges, there was also a sense of hope.

Witnessing the passion, dedication, intellect, and technological know-how that these young individuals bring to the battle against climate change was truly inspiring. We are proud to support these young climate champions in their fight.
