LAOS FLOOD RESPONSE 2023: FOOD DISTRIBUTION TO THE FLOOD-AFFECTED HOUSEHOLDS IN SAVANNAKHET PROVINCE

On September 29, 2023, a Food Handover Ceremony was held in Atsaphone District, Savanaket Province, given by Save the Children International in Laos and represented by the district board and the Department of Labor and Social Welfare at the Provincial and District level to be distributed to 745 flood-affected households in two districts in Savanakhet province, Atsaphone, and Phalanxay.

Rice and dry food from SCI humanitarian funds are distributed to 420 households in Atsaphone district and 325 households in Phalanxay district, which are the households that were severely affected by the heavy flood in August this year that these 745 households and nearly 1,150 children will be able to live during the recovery period after this flood. The distribution includes rice, salt, vegetable oil, dry fish, and peanuts that are nutritious and useful for households in the affected areas.

Ms. Bounthalangsi Khammanyvong, Provincial Party Committee and also the Mayor of Atsaphone, said, "As we all know, Save the Children has come to implement educational assistance in our district for years, and this time, we would like to express our thanks and praise to the Save the Children as well as the Provincial and District authorities who have supported our district in distributing the necessary item during this disaster."

Ms. Phounsy Phasavaeng, representing Save the Children International in Laos, expressed her gratitude to the committee and related parties from both districts who came to help collect data on the number of affected households and also led the team in distribution which started on September 27 and finished on September 30. "Save the Children has seen the need to give priority to supporting families affected by this flood, especially families with children, by sharing funds to help with food and rice relief to ensure that children and their families will not starve because it may affect the child's learning ability and social, economic development of the district as well as the province" - said Ms. Phounsy.
